The Center for the Global South is a hub of intellectual thought. It plays a prominent role among academic institutions examining issues of the global South. The Center's staff also conducts original research, develops curricula, and perhaps most importantly, teaches.

The Center understands that today's students are tomorrow's world leaders. With a combination of research, classroom study, and hands-on experience, the Center's academic programs help future leaders understand the relationship between the global South and the North and lay the ground work for a mutually beneficial relationship among all nations.

Each summer, approximately 30 graduate and advanced undergraduate students from many different countries and universities in the United States successfully complete the Center's Summer Institute on the Global South. The six- week institute has usually two consecutive tracks in international relations andinternational business which examine the challenges facing the global South. Both tracks include frequent guest lectures by prominent international experts and field trips.

In addition, students will spend one day at the United Nations in New York, where they will tour the UN, hear panel lectures and presentations, and attend a luncheon where they will have the opportunity to meet ambassadors, other senior UN officials, and business persons, and present their questions on international relations, international business and related topics. In July 1996, three institute students presented their ideas for reforming the UN charter to the UN Secretary-General.

Students who have completed the summer institute today work with their governments, the private sector, NGOs, and international organizations. Some former students, for example, nowwork in the governments of Germany, Japan, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and
the United States. Others are employed by the United Nations, World Bank, OAS, Inter- American Development Bank, UN Food and Agricultural Organization, and International Fund for Agricultural Development. Many of the institute's former students stay in touch with the Center and maintain their interests in its activities.
