What
is the global South? How does it relate to the current state of
international relations in the
post-Cold War period? Now in its seventh year,
the Summer Institute, The Global South and New International
Relations, is committed to answering
these questions and in doing so to heighten
students' awareness of Southern perspectives. The global
South, both
a
geographic and economic designation, a collective of the
developing countries of the world,
formerly referred to as the Third World,
faces a unique set of problems, aspirations and concerns.
Recent developments such as the Asian economic crisis, the India/Pakistan nuclear tests, the International Criminal Court deliberations in Rome, and the numerous African conflicts, etc. have focused attention on the global South and on the urgent need for the United Nations along with other regional and non-governmental organizations to address the problems of long-term sustainable development, social cohesion, and a stable and lasting peace in regions that have experienced acute economic crisis, social upheaval, the turmoil of war and civil strife, and overall marginalization.
The
South Commission's recommendations for the future of the global
South include South-South cooperation,
self-reliant and people-centered development,
and a trans-
formation
of the North-South relationship from one
of dominance and hegemony to one of genuine cooperation and
global interdependence. The Summer
Institute will examine these ideas as
well as the topics of the recent UN conferences on environment,
human rights, population, social
development, women, and habitat through
readings, lectures, field trips and discussions. Students are
expected to immerse themselves
in the subject for the six weeks of the Institute
in order to develop a more profound insight into the role of the
global South in the new international
relations.
