The price, of course, was the profound alteration, and in many cases
destruction, of the political, social and cultural structures the Iberians
found in America. One immediate effect in the first half-century was the
population crash among the Indigenous peoples, followed by the brutality
of the Black slave trade. For the rest of the Colonial period the prosperity
and pride of the upper class Iberians was paid for by the labor of those
who found themselves in the lower portions of the socio-economic pyramid.
