for Lesson 9 is Sor Juana
Initially there were two Spanish viceroyalties, both based in the regions
which had once held the core of the Aztec and Inca empires: New Spain (Mexico)
and Peru. Brazil was also eventually a viceroyalty under the Portuguese
crown. Toward the end of the Colonial period two additional vice-royalties
were created: New Granada (roughly today's Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador
and Panama), and Rio de La Plata (today's Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and
Bolivia). See Map, figure 9-5.
