Assume you are a young Spanish university student in the year 1519. You have just heard about a university dropout named Hernán Cortés who is trying to organize an expedition (some are calling it a "semester abroad") to some new lands found by Christopher Columbus. Will you join him? Why?

Note: In later versions of this web site we plan to have a "chat room" where you will be able to answer the question, post your answer, have other students (and the instructor) read your comments and make their own comments. For the moment you might want to type your answers in a word processing program and let the instructor have them for extra credit. We will also be discussing these questions orally in class.
