What purposes did the authors of the literature and art of the Encounter have, and how did they achieve these purposes?

Note: In later versions of this web site we plan to have a "chat room" where you will be able to answer the question, post your answer, have other students (and the instructor) read your comments and make their own comments. For the moment you might want to type your answers in a word processing program and let the instructor have them for extra credit. We will also be discussing these questions orally in class.
