Brazil is something of a newcomer to Antarctic geopolitics, but has had a permanent scientific base since 1983. Brazil makes no claim (it cannot, having signed the Antarctic Treaty), but has argued the novel "Frontage theory"under which six South American nations (Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Peru and Ecuador) would have an areas of primary interest in portions of the South American Quadrant of Antarctica.
