The ancient Greeks gave the name "Antarcticus" to the land
mass they thought existed around the South Pole because it was the antithesis
of the land mass they thought existed at the North Pole. They called the
northern land mass (which actually does not exist) "Arctus" ("bear")
because that was the name of a constellation which was over the North Pole.
