Certain elements of Quiroga's tales are surrealistic, or at least involve a mixture of the real and the unreal, the impossible, or the psycho-pathological. We see an example of this in the story that follows. But in contrast with many of his contemporary Surrealist colleagues, Quiroga clearly lets the reader know the dividing line between the real world and the imaginary one.
