The Cuban Revolution which brought Fidel Castro to power in early 1959 has been one of the historic landmarks of 20th Century Latin America. It brought more profound and enduring changes than even the Mexican Revolution, involved the two superpowers (at one point bringing them to the verge of nuclear war), and because it set itself up as an exportable example, had considerable impact on a number of other Latin American nations.
