Master of Arts in Spanish: Latin American Studies
Requires 33 credit hours of approved graduate work, of which at least 21 hours must be in courses taught in Spanish. The remaining 12 hours may be in English or Spanish, as long as relevant to Spanish /Latin American Studies (see below). Note that generic courses (37.656 Topic; 37.554 Colloquium; 37.559 Classics; 37.705 Seminar) may be taken more than once if the content is different. Internships are encouraged, and are normally taken Pass/Fail, with a maximum of 3 credits.

2. One course in Latin American literature or culture selected from: 37.656 Topic; or 37.554 Classics; or 37.705 Seminar; or 03.639 Culture Area Analysis:
3. One course in Spanish linguistics, language or translation selected from 37.656 (Language-related topic such as Advanced Spanish Grammar or Applied Spanish Linguistics), or 37.658 Intro to Spanish Translation, or 37.661 Intro to Spanish Linguistics:
4. One course in Latin American history, politics, international relations, or economics, selected from 19.555 Political Economy; or 29.640 History; or 33.577 International Relations of Latin America; or 53.532 Political Institutions (Latin America)
5. Elective in LFS Spanish: Latin American Studies
6. Elective in LFS Spanish: Latin American Studies

II. Field of Concentration (12 credits)
In consultation with an advisor, students select one of the following fields of concentration: Related Studies (e.g.: history, international relations, politics, economics, etc); or Literature and Culture; or Language Teaching; or Linguistics/Language/Translation; or Teaching English as a Second Language.

III. Thesis/ non-thesis option:
a. Thesis option: 6 credits of 37.797 Master's Thesis Seminar as part of the field of concentration.
b. Non-thesis option: students take a second seminar (37.705) in the core (course #5,#6,#7 above), or do a research project in any approved course within the program.
IV. Assessment:
a. Assessment of core: a written comprehensive examination, in Spanish.
b. Assessment of field of concentration: oral presentation of a portfolio.
