Current figures from the Embassy of Finland have placed the Internet hosts per domain at 62/1000. Finland has 600 PC networks and over 50,000 PCs connected to the Internet.
A report was generated by Finland to the European Comission to inform the EU of Finnish expertise in telematics. This report, TELEMATICS FINLAND, addressed a number of Finland's telecommunicative efforts. In the 1995 edition, this information regarding Finland's Internet was related under the Research section.
"Finland is one of the most advanced countries in the area of research networks. In 1984, the Finnish University (FUNET) was established by the Finnish Ministry of Education. Its mission was to organize telecommunications connections between Finnish universities which have been decentralized throughout the country. In the beginning, the network consisted of point-to-point connections and proprietary protocols.
FUNET was also in charge of organizing connections with international research networks. As soon as the European Academic Research Network (EARN) was established, FUNET joined and became a provider of EARN services in Finland.
Today all Finnish universities and most contemporary polytechnic institutes are members of FUNET. More than 30 other public and industrial research institutes are also connected. The primary protocol is TCP/IP, but other commonly used protocols are also supported. The number of Finnish Internethosts (ip-hosts within the .fi-domain) was about 70,000 according to RIPE figures in December 1994."
