Internet Activity in GREECE

  1. Number of Internet Hosts
  2. Presently, Greece has 2,958 Internet hosts serving 45,000 connected users.(5)
  3. Number of web sites
  4. Currently, Greece has 72 WWW servers, a majority of which are within university and educational institutions; 10 Gopher servers; 6 On-line Library Servers; and several ftp sites. A complete list of these servers, and access to them, is available through FORTHnet: Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas.Click here to access FORTHnet
  5. Type of Internet connection
  6. As with most of the other EU countries, like Italy, OTE has signed an agreement with Netscape Communications Corporation to provide Internet Access through EUnet and Greece Online. This agreement has been set up as a turnkey project, similar to the agreement between Telecom Italia and Olivetti in Italy.(21)

  7. Global Information Infrastructure (GII) plans
  8. By the end of 1995, Greece is expected to have over 75,000 users connected to the Internet. This constant growth is a result of the ample amount of WWW servers in Greece, (see FORTHnet), who constantly promote the information highway as "a wave of the future" which is sure to bring success to any business. The final result will be to create a World Wide Web Browser package for retail and wholesale distribution.(21)
  9. Other on-line services and their impact/saturation
  10. With the introduction of the Services for the Rhodes project, state of the art technology was installed in Rhodes absorbing 150 miles of fiber optic cables and providing 70,000 digital lines. These new lines will probably escalate the amount of users connected to the Internet.(29)
