Human Capital & IT in GREECE

  1. Literacy: percentage of adults who can read and write
  2. In a world census study done by the CIA on Greeks over the age of 15, data illustrated that 98% of the males and 89% of the females were considered literate. The total population literacy percentage for adults was 93%.(3)
  3. English fluency
  4. While Greek is considered to be the official language, English and French are predominantly spoken as well. In fact, English fluency or familiarity is common among 65% of all Greeks, and is a major core requirement in the education system.(3)
  5. Number of CS/CE/MIS post-secondary programs; grads per year
  6. There are dozens of institutions within Greece which CS/CE/MIS education programs. However, there are 10(ten) noteworthy programs which set the standard for other institutions to follow.

  7. Emigration & Immigration of computer professionals
  8. While Greece is proud to host several educational programs and institutions for information systems, most of the attendees move to bigger opportunities outside their own country. By leaving Greece, they seek the opportunity for enhanced success which may take them a long time to aquire within Greece because of its slow IS/IT production development as an industry.
  9. Is there a high-tech technopolis?
  10. If we were to label any area within Greece that can be considered a high-tech technopolis, we would have to agree that both Athens and Thessaolinki are the Silicon Valleys of Greece. While the majority of educational institutions are harbored there, both cities are also underway in trying to create a telecommunications industry which exports as well as imports.
