Computer Hardware and Software in GREECE

  1. Large platform usage
  2. The most popular platform usage in Greece is through open systems. A European standard for platform usage is UNIX which is mainly used for local networks. UNIX based platforms are the driving force behind most of the IT in Europe. Although, most large European corporations use UNIX platforms, open systems dominate the IT within corporate Greece.(12)

    MS-DOS and MS-Windows are the most popular Operating Systems in Greece. Comparatively, these two programs are also as widely used throughout Europe and Turkey. IBM OS/400 is also very popular within Greece as a result of IBM's constant marketing throughout EU nations.

  3. PC's per 1000 people; PC's per 1000 businesses
  4. In a 1993-94 study, research showed that, in Greece, there are 43.6 PC's in use for every 1000 people. In addition, their are 74.7 Pc's operating per 1000 businesses. These figures are rising at an average level of 9-12% per year.(5)

  10. There is no manufacturing of computer chips within Greece. All chip production is imported.
